As a kid Steve and his dad would work on electronics together in the family garage. While he was in high school he meet Steve Wozniak, a brilliant computer engineer, at Hewlett-Packard. The two developed great respect for each other. After he finished high school he enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Only six months later he dropped out of college and spent the next year and a half dropping in on creative classes. In 1974 he became a video game designer with Atari. Once again he left after several months. This time to find spiritual enlightenment in India. In 1976, when he was only 21, Jobs and Wozniak started Apple Computers.
Steve and Wozniak are given the credit of revolutionizing the computer industry. They made a series of user-friendly personal computer, (PC), that initially sold for $666.66 each. The Apple I, their first model, made them $774,000. Sales increased 700 percent to $139 million dollars, three years after the release of their second model, the Apple II. Apple Computers became a publicly traded company. On the first day of marketing they had a market value of $1.2 billion dollars. Jobs looked to John Scully of Pepsi-Cola to fill the role of being Apple Computers President.
Apple's next several products had many flaws. IBM quickly surpassed Apple sales. In 1984 Apple released the Macintosh. They marketed the Macintosh as a peice of a counter culture lifestyle: romantic, youthful, and creative. Even though the Macintosh had positive sales and performance better than IBM's PCs, it was still not IBM compatable. Scully thought that Jobs was hurting Apple. Executives then began to phase him out. Then in 1985 Jobs resigned from being Apple's CEO to start a new hardware and software company called NeXT, Inc. The next year he bought an animation company from George Lucas. Thi later became Pixar Animation studios. jobs initially invested $50 million dollars of his own money into the company. in 2006 Walt Disney and Pixar merged, making Jobs Disney's largest shareholder. In 1997 jobs returned to his job as Apple's CEO.
In 2003, Steve Jobs discovered that he had a neuroendocrine tumor which is a rare but operable form of pancreatic cancer. Jobs postponed surgery for nine months, making Apple's board of directors nervous. Jobs had a successful surgery to remove the tumor. Early in the year 2009, reports started going around about Jobs weight lose. Jobs said that he was dealing with a hormone imbalance.
